Inspired by my interest in sci-fi universes, especially Star Trek, I chose to model my own Starfleet ship for my MODL 302 final project. It bears all the features of a Starfleet ship, such as saucer and secondary hulls, thrusters, impulse engines, phaser banks, a prominent blue deflector, and distinguished blue nacelles with red Bussard collectors, but is meant to act as a warship and carrier of smaller fighters. It is challenging to make something new that fits into a pre-existing universe, so a significant part of my process for this model involved researching Starfleet ships that have already been designed for the franchise. I then sketched different starship ideas based on this research and refined the best idea into orthogonal drawings.
